Nobel Prize Winner on Bush Economics (11/17/07)

The damage done to the American economy does not make front-page headlines every day, but the repercussions will be felt beyond the lifetime of anyone reading this page..

I’m working today on my article on Charlie Rangel’s tax proposals for LLRX. This evening I’m invited to the “110th birthday celebration” of another fellow and my friend Mark Barbour, who plays in the Cajun band Billy Coteaux, i.e. Hill Billy.

Today, read a notice about Philip Levine’s 80th birthday celebration, which will include a reading by Levine and among others, Yusef Komunyakaa, who was the father of Jehan, slain by his mother, poet Reetika Vazirani, before her own suicide over four years ago. I knew Reetika briefly when we were in the same Blacksburg writing group, after being introduced by Ethelbert Miller. I spent a good portion of my time at the library, when I should have writing about economics, instead puzzling over her death, as depicted by Paula Span in the Washington Post Magazine, in her long article, “The Failing Light.”
