Tonights dance features the Contrarians from Charleston! Paula and I are making the drive down to Blacksburg. The Contrarians and others will also be at the Whitewater Whirl in May.

Huey P. Newton was born this day in 1942. A PBS resource which accompanied the Spike Lee film based on the play by Roger Guenveur Smith can be found here. What a lot of folks may not have read is that Newton renounced political violence upon his release from prison or that he received a Ph.D. in social philosophy in 1980 from the University of California, with the dissertation, “War Against the Panthers: A Study in Repression in America. “

Fredrika Newton (his widow) and Black Panther Fred Hilliard started a foundation in his memory in 1992. For a hoot, check out this graphic for Burn, Baby Burn taste of the sixties revolutionary hotsauce, which the foundation sells as a fundraiser for children’s breakfast programs, free health care and transportation for seniors.
