Entry for January 10, 2007

Composite of $5 gold and $1 silver U.S. Mint coins issued today in honor of the founding of Jamestown.

Today, the Virginia General Assemby convened for its 2007 session (calendar), which coincides with the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown.

More later. I’ve got to leave to get ready for the book group. We’ll be discussing William Styron. Here’s a link to an interview from 1954 with the Paris Review , just three years after the publication of his first novel Lie Down in Darkness at the age of 26, which won the American Academy’s Prix de Rome. The PBS American Masters episode on Styron describes it as :

Told under the shadow of the Hiroshima bombing, LIE DOWN IN DARKNESS charts the tragic descent into suicide of a young woman raised in a troubled Virginia family

Here’s a second interview from the PR from 1999.
