Entry for August 07, 2006

The photo  is from a rally by World Trade Center Families for Proper Burial held September 1, 2004.l

The group includes 9/11 family members, friends, and concerned citizens from across the United States and abroad. We seek to inform the general public of the injustice of leaving the ashen remains of those killed at the WTC in a garbage dump, the Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island. The City of New York has taken the position that the ashen remains should not be removed from the landfill.

The poster is by Art Aid.  It reads

We will never forget.  Please sign this important petition now.  My Daddy is not garbage.  Ashes to dump.  Staten Island Fresh Kills Landfill. Don’t let this be their final resting place.

Their petition is here.  More photographs of the 2004 rally  here and of the 2005 rally here.  Found out about the group in doing research for the poem I’m working on.  Bob Baird wrote about the group’s efforts August 18, 2005 for the Journal News, “9/11 families sue for proper burial.”

an online voice for all who believe that Ground Zero is no place for politics. Our goal is a fitting and proper memorial to be built for those who perished on September 11th, and to tell the story of that fateful day – and that day alone.

The site started after World Trade Center Memorial Foundation board member Debra Burlingame wrote her op-ed piece,  The Great Ground Zero Heist which appeared in the Wall Street Journal on June 8, 2005.

The op-ed is vitriolic in its claims that the memorial has been stolen by the left; however the Take Back the Memorial provides good links to coverage on what is being done by the city to memorialize the dead from September 11.
