Entry for September 06, 2005 (my birthday–Thanks, Mom!)

The federal Violence Against Women Act

This is up in Congress for re-authorization or it expires 9/30/05.  Why not take action today?

Amnesty International USA  is sponsoring a petition drive to to Congress, asking members to
support reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (S. 1197 and H.R 2876 and H.R. 3171).

Every day four women die in the U.S. as a result of domestic violence. And more than 700 women are raped or sexually assaulted every day. We can stop these tragedies — but we urgently need your help. Join hundreds of thousands of women across the country in making sure that the Violence Against Women Act is reauthorized by Congress when it expires in September 2005. Please help! Millions — that¹s right, MILLIONS — of women and children will be better off as a result!

And after you write, why not call call Senators Warner and Allen, neither of whom are c0-sponsors.  Or if you’re reading this outside Virginia,  to find out your senators go here and select your state.  Boucher from the 9th District is a co-sponsor, but other representatives are not.  To find our your representatie go here and enter your ZIP code. When the receptionist answers your call, politely say:  “My name is [your name] and I am a constituent of [xxx]. I am calling about the Violence Against Women Act, Senate bill..

FYI, H.R. 2876 mirrors the Senate bill and maintains current services without funding growth.  H.R. 3171 adds protections for battered immigrant women and promotes access to emergency contraception for rape survivors

This is where to find Amnesty’s talking points    to write your newpapers.  For instance,  write The Roanoke Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today.

The National Organization for Women  has more detailed information and actions.

The National Crime Center for Victims offers a  summary of S 1197

The U.S. Office on Women’s Health offers lots of resource materials on stopping violence.
